21 years passing soon, what have I learned so far?

I don’t expect or recommend anyone else to read my blog, mostly because I write it with only one audience in mind. Myself. However you can never know who will come across your stuff. I for one hope that one day whatever I am writing will serve as inspiration to someone, hopefully that someone is me. No, I am not being egotistical. If anybody is collaterally assisted, fine, but since nobody is willing to look out for me (so far) I’m left all alone to do that job (for now).

  1. Never start a fight, but always end them.
You don’t want to be known as the aggressive person. However, if anybody starts a struggle with you, physical or not, you have to go all the way and end it. Earn your respect.
  2. If you can’t count your friends on your hands, you’ve got too many friends.
I don’t care if your Facebook (I hope you don’t have one) says you have 1000 friends. You don’t. Those people don’t care about you. They are nothing more than past acquaintances who you have mild memories of and who will never stand by you in your hour of need. Stand by your true friends and invest in them.
  3. Words have power.
Be careful of what you say. A misspoken word can haunt you for years to come. Don’t be afraid to stop and think before you say something.
  4. No one can make you feel anything you don’t want to.
Are you feeling sad? It’s your fault. Nobody has the power to make you feel anything besides what you want to feel. Someone hurt you? Well, sucks for them, you’re not the one losing an awesome friend now are you?
  5. If it’s out of your control, why worry about it?
That’s pretty much it. If you can’t do anything about it, why drive yourself insane? If you’re still breathing, you’re still living, everything is ok. There is always a way out of everything (in this world at least).
  6. Never regret. If it’s good, wonderful. If it’s bad, it’s experience.
I’ve never regret something in my life and made it better by doing so. Then why bother? Live on no matter the outcome but don’t be stupid. If it’s good, do it again. If it’s bad, stop doing it.
  7. You tolerate in life what you subject yourself to.
Is everybody treating you differently? Do you feel alone in a group of people? What are you waiting for? Turn that situation around. Nobody is going to do it for you, stand-up for yourself. Fight the good fight. Don’t settle for anything less than your absolute happiness.
  8. People deserve a second chance, but not a third.
Everybody messes up sometimes. It’s human nature to do so. However, never give a third chance because it’s simply not worth it. If someone hurt you twice they will hurt you a third time, and a forth, and a fifth…
  9. Do not take words for granted.
Always question what people say unless it’s undoubtedly the truth. Never trust anything for face value. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t. Do not let yourself be ordered around without questioning the reasoning behind it (be wise, there are exceptions to this).
  10. Tell the truth. Every time. All the time.
I left this for last because I think it’s the most important. Did you screw up? Admit it. Did you unwarrantably hurt someone? Speak up and apologize. If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything. It is better for you to be known for something you are then to be known for something you aren’t. When it comes right down to it, what good is it to be known if the person everybody is talking about is not really yourself?

In these twenty-one years I’ve learned a lot about life. Lessons which I don’t want to forget. Memories which I refuse to let go, not because they are good but because they taught me how to be a better person, for others and specially for myself. I hope one day I can look back at life and breathe in ease knowing that I’ve lived as well as I could’ve.

Over and out.
